Why is my Live Photo not working? Troubleshooting Guide

You take what you think is a brilliant Live Photo, only to tap and hold the screen and find… nothing happens. The image remains completely static. If your Live Photo isn't working, animating, or playing sound, there are several common culprits ranging from battery settings to cross-platform sharing issues.

Here is a complete troubleshooting guide to figure out why your Live Photos are broken and how to fix them.

Live Photo Troubleshooting

1. Low Power Mode is Enabled

This is the most common reason Live Photos suddenly stop animating in your camera roll. When your iPhone is in Low Power Mode, iOS disables certain background tasks and visual effects to preserve battery life, including the auto-play of Live Photos.

The Fix: Check the top right corner of your screen. If your battery icon is yellow, Low Power Mode is on. Go to Settings > Battery and toggle off Low Power Mode, or charge your phone past 80%.

2. Reduce Motion is Turned On

If you've enabled accessibility settings to reduce screen animations to prevent motion sickness, iOS will also disable the automatic playback of Live Photos as you scroll through your albums.

The Fix: Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Motion. Check if Reduce Motion is toggled on. If it is, turning it off will restore the fluid animations in your Photos app.

3. The Photo Was Sent via a Third-Party App

Did you receive the photo on WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, or an email? Most third-party messaging and social media apps strip the video data from Live Photos to save bandwidth. By the time it reaches your phone, it is just a standard JPEG.

The Fix: If someone is sending you a Live Photo, ask them to send it via iMessage or AirDrop. These are the only two native Apple sharing methods that consistently preserve the embedded video data. Alternatively, ask them to convert it using a Live Photo to Video converter before sending it over WhatsApp.

4. Live Photo Was Turned Off in the Camera App

It's easy to accidentally tap the Live Photo icon in the Camera app, turning the feature off right before taking a shot.

The Fix: Unfortunately, if the photo was taken with Live Photo turned off, there is no way to retroactively add motion to it. For future photos, open your Camera app and ensure the concentric circles icon in the top right corner is yellow (not white with a slash through it).

5. You Edited the Photo and Disabled "Live"

When editing a Live Photo natively in the iOS Photos app, tapping the Live icon allows you to toggle the motion off to create a still image.

The Fix:

  1. Open the photo and tap Edit.
  2. Tap the Live Photo icon at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Look at the top center of the screenβ€”if the yellow "LIVE" button has a slash through it, tap it to re-enable the motion.
  4. Tap Done.

6. Corrupted File Transfer to PC/Mac

If you transferred Live Photos to a computer and later moved them back to your phone, the files may have become unlinked. A true Live Photo consists of two files: a high-res still image (.HEIC or .JPG) and a short video (.MOV). If the metadata connecting these two files gets stripped during transfer, the iPhone will no longer recognize them as a pair.

The Fix: If you have the separated .HEIC and .MOV files, you can use our Image and Video to Live Photo Tool to stitch them back together into a single, working Live Photo format, then download it back to your iPhone.
